I like how the five POV characters make a balanced dungeon party: Sigrun is melee damage, Xin is utility support, Marcus is the tank, Jabari is ranged DPS or a second melee, Fuuka is the caster/summoner. Five is just the right number.

    Vel

    Nice! Keeping it that way.

Fuuka has “saved the day” several times, and at times it feels a bit deus ex machina. She also seems to be the most powerful, but she’s the oldest and most experienced of the five, so that much makes sense.

    Vel

I understand and agree with you. I’ll keep an eye out.

Håkon is nice, and his comic relief is a great pressure valve for the story. Without him the world could easily turn cruel and go grimdark. He also feels subtly important to the bigger plot. He’s just a baby now, ripe with potential.

    Vel

    Very much agreed, and appreciated.

Dilinur is the de facto leader and political figurehead. She could serve those roles well, and there was a brief showcase of her combat skills in Volume 1, but mostly staying behind the scenes in Volume 1 plus her (fairly early) abduction in Volume 2 means she reads more like a plot device now.

    Vel

Quite right. I’ll keep this in mind.

Diego is in an awkward place. His character feels barely defined, and beyond being the Polaris’s captain it isn’t clear what his purpose is. At Ch 41.2 two of his lines were red flags for too much AI assistance. The Polaris has been transport and a “stage for plot” in Volume 2. Maybe in Volume 3, where deep space is more prominent, Diego gets a bigger role.

    Vel

It’s true. Most of Diego’s dialogue has gone through Opus or Sonnet rephrasing. My Spanish fluency is, like my Japanese, fairly novice. And Diego’s role does feel too small. But we can look forward to more of him in Volume 3. This much I can say.

Iron Roach is great. I’m a fan. But his place in the supporting cast, alongside Dilinur and Diego, means he isn’t getting as much spotlight.

    Vel

Yeah, I feel that one. Roach was actually the most mentioned and “liked” villain in the 2024 rendition, the one now on hiatus. I’ll see to giving him a more relevant role soon.

Both Diego and Iron Roach belong to the same tier as Dilinur and Håkon.

Game of Thrones / ASOIAF isn’t a great model for a story like Nucleus. It’s hard to know which characters matter when people keep dying, and the survivors aren’t so much heroes as the lucky ones who didn’t get axed.

    Vel

True! I have great respect for GRRM, but if Nucleus’s stated objective holds (feel-good sci-fi romance with spice), the high-mortality, death-and-grief formula won’t apply much. Would StarCraft 2 be a better alignment target?

I recall Sigrun broke the 22-point PRIMAL threshold a few times in Volume 2. That’s on top of Marcus having his PRIMAL shift up and down.

    Vel

Yes! Both are intentional. Under extraordinary circumstances a person can break the Rule of 22. Those cases are usually the ones where combat and brute force won’t solve the problem.

I like that there’s a system and a limit behind the gates and the rules of cultivation. I think the only time it came up was in the Volume 2 cultivation scenes, where it was shown mixed with a light lecture. It also makes Fuuka’s mysticism cool, though I still dislike her on moral grounds while respecting that she’s consistent and well written. Think about good examples like The Lord of the Rings: there’s clearly a system behind how Gandalf casts, with strengths and limits, but Tolkien showed it instead of teaching it like a class.

    Vel

Thanks. I’ll keep an eye on the balance between telling and showing in the new chapters.

I like the idea of the gas giants and Proxima Centauri. You get moons close to each other, so plenty of quick travel and skirmishes are possible. Like Jupiter and Saturn.

    Vel

Excellent. There will certainly be arcs featuring Jupiter and Saturn in the foreseeable future. The Nordic Commonwealth won’t free itself, and Saturn promises many, many interesting things.

I’d caution against over-reliance on AI assistance. I’ve read enough books to tell when the assistance is too heavy and taking away the human voice. It got more noticeable toward the end of Volume 2. For your case I’d recommend this tool: blader/humanizer.

    Vel

Much appreciated. I’m not a fan of AI taking away the human voice either. That tool is going into the priority section of my to-do list. I do have an increasing need for AI assistance because of exophoria, but an acceptable middle ground may be dictation and voice-recognition typing, with me still cherry-picking lines and passages. Fable and Opus will be my go-to models going forward, since they understand nuance, tell good from bad with sharp precision, and can assemble coherent sentences from garbled dictation. Of course, token cost means my writing and posting speed will stay as it is, if not slower.

On space travel: there’s good and bad to characters losing time to FTL trips. The middle part of such a trip could be accelerated, though. Time dilation as a concept could help: time slows down when you travel close to the speed of light, so you don’t need to spend a full year, or even four months, when one month per light year is the default FTL speed in Nucleus. A professional laid it out here, and it should help when you write such passages again: The Overview Effekt (YouTube).

    Vel

By the time I wrote this memo I’d finished the video and subscribed to The Overview Effekt. Beautiful and refreshing. I learned something, and I’ve got new ideas now.

The story’s lore reads as very western sci-fi. Why identify it as wuxia?

    Vel

It does sit firmly inside the space-opera genre, with (at times obvious) homage to the video-game franchise StarCraft. I’d like to think the number of Pan-Asian characters in the plot, the feeling of a band of heroes against several societal systems that are efficient but unjust, plus (wink) sexual cultivation, make it unapologetically wuxia. That’s an important part of Nucleus’s mission: to promote understanding and meaningful interaction between western cultures and eastern ones, my own included.

Every spell is spoken out loud. That seems inspired by Jujutsu Kaisen.

    Vel

Actually, it’s inspired by Skyrim‘s dragon shouts. But yeah, I like Jujutsu Kaisen, too.

Taiwan is described as “annexed” by the Imperium, which is obviously China. I assume you support Taiwan being part of China.

    Vel

The Imperium of Dragons’ territory on Earth includes Mainland China, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, both Koreas, Laos and more. That is there to show its military expansionism and aggression. As far as real-life politics go, I firmly support Taiwan’s independence and sovereignty as a country, and I advocate for China’s democratization. I stand by that view. It’s the sensible and right one to me, no apologies.

Why a Nucleus Watch, and not a Nucleus Phone or a Nucleus BB Call?

    Vel

I once got a job at Garmin, a company I’d wanted to work at since I was young. Much of the Nucleus Watch is what I imagine a space-worthy personal device would be if Garmin ever teamed up with, say, Patek Philippe and Apple to build something new. Even today, Garmin watches work in deep mountains, polar regions and underwater. I never passed probation at Garmin, but I was proud of how the Nucleus Watch concept settled, so it stayed in the universe, and with me, even after Garmin stopped being part of my career plan.

What’s the big science behind each female character’s cup size? Sigrun, Fuuka, Dilinur, and so on.

    Vel

(A long chuckle, then some deep breaths.) Assuming this is a serious question: I did some research on how men’s and women’s diets in different cultures lead to different physiques, body shapes and beauty standards. Yes, really. I’m that weird. At a high level, the western diet (bread-and-butter heavy, high calorie) tends toward bigger, stronger, more muscular people, and, yes, larger busts. Norway ranks first in the world for average female breast size; proof here. The eastern diet, on the other hand, correlates with longer lifespans, calmer moods (Japan being the prime example) and humbler sizes in all places.

So yeah, Sigrun is D cup (E when Skuggr Milk power is on), Fuuka is C cup, and Dilinur is B cup because the author is a horny dude. they have different diets and lifestyles. Gods be praised!

On the website, the Directorate has this deep green and gold theme everywhere. Islam?

    Vel

Nope. The Emerald Directorate is my own spin on Pan-African culture, aboriginal Latin America, and very ancient, pre-Islamic Persia. Their use of the Arabic script for writing comes from in-universe cultural exchange between the Chalices and the shamans of Central Asia.
